Hi all,
I decided to send for the most expensive kit I have ever bought in one go. (and sight unseen) After the success the 4 submarine builds last year, I decided to save my pounds up and send to China for a model of “HMS Jervis” a J class destroyer. After studying the photos on the internet as best as you can I thought that the kit looked to be as good as HMS Storm was. (which was incredible) so sent my money, put my hands together and prayed.
Thought Jervis would contrast nicely with my model of the Fletcher Class.
Just a month after sending for the kit it arrived and my prays were answered. All parts were well wrapped and upon unwrapping it all looked really nice. Now it did say in the advert that there are no instructions with this kit so it's going to be really tricky to build. The bigger parts placement are all pretty obvious but the smaller parts are going to take some studying. I tried to find some scale drawing but have drawn a blank so will have to study the photos of the ship really carefully.
As is my technique when I build a model of a subject, I gather as much information as I can find ie: Books which are usually a good read and information source. Found that “Jervis” went right through the war from start to finish without the loss of any crew member due to enemy action and was thus referred to as “Lucky Jervis”
Now as she went throughout the war the ship had some changes to her appearance at certain times, so I had to pick a time and appearance I wanted to depict her.
I wanted to change what came in the kit by removing a set of torpedoes and replacing them with a four-inch A/A gun in its place. Also had to decide what other A/A defensive guns to add which would depend on the time and camouflage colours she was painted. (Decision, decisions. But that's part of the fun in modelling) so I sent to “Micro Master” of New Zeeland for set of Vickers Quad 0.50” A/A guns & 4” QF MkV HA Gun. I already had enough 20mm guns so could arm her in any configuration I decide on.
I have already decided to build her full hull.
So, without further ado it's time to dive in and let the fun continue
Please if you are a member of the SIG how about contributing to the forum so other members can see what you're up to. My builds are never perfect.
