F-4E.

Post by Andrew1878 »

Hi all

I recently picked up the Academy F4. It's - ok. The shape is pretty good but it's a very basic kit. Anyway, the decals - they seem to be quite interesting but they are for a very obscure aircraft, and I can't find any photo references for it, so if anyone has any images of Phantom AF70 287, I'd be interested to see them!
I'll keep you posted on how this goes...

I wonder if there's a registration problem...
On the reference sites below, there are no F-4Es with the year prefix 70 and the only ones with serial number 287 are the following

http://cgibin.rcn.com/jeremy.k/cgi-bin/ ... ntent=F-4E

- 67-0287 (MSN 3043) with 388th TFW crashed near Udorn AB, Thailand after collision with F-4 71-0241

- 69-0287 (MSN 3826) 8th TFW, 435th TFS) shot down by ground fire near Xom Quan/You Quan/My Thuy, North Vietnam
Oct 6, 1972. Crew ejected and made POW.

1971-73: USAF 388th TFW.
1974: USAF 34th TFS (388th TFW).
12/28/1974: Crashed near Udorn AB, Thailand after a collision with F-4E 71-0241.

- McDonnell F-4E-42-MC Phantom II/69-0287
Delivered to the United States Air Force.
USAF 401st TFW.
USAF 31st TFW.
1970: USAF 336th TFS (4th TFW).
1972: USAF 435th TFS (8th TFW).
1972: USAF 335th TFS (4th TFW).
10/6/1972: Shot down by ground fire near Xom Quan/You Quan/My Thuy, North Vietnam. Or on 10/5/1972?

Maybe that's why we can't find a photo, and only a drawing for which we don't know where the author found the information....

The only information consistent with the drawing (excluding the number) comes from the following site :

https://www.joebaugher.com/usaf_serials/1967.html

67-0283/0341 McDonnell Douglas F-4E-35-MC Phantom
0287 (MSN 3043) "Positive Thinker" 469TFS. 1969: USAF 469th TFS (388th TFW). 1971-73: USAF 388th TFW. 1974: USAF 34th TFS (388th TFW). Crashed near Udorn AB, Thailand after collision with F-4E 71-0241 Dec 28, 1974.

You can search on the site year by year and by typing "ctrl f" on your computer with the number 287.
It shows 69-0287 but nothing else but nothing else for the Phantoms (I only searched for the years 67 to 70 because there are all the serials from 1922 to 2023.......   ).

That's why, sometimes, I hate decal manufacturers who never provide good references or the slightest element to find the real plane....

Thanks for that. I did wonder about the AF70 and whether it was correct. Thanks for the assistance though, appreciated!
