144 in 144

Post by DH106 »

Some pictures from our Telford theme on the number 144. It began as being about 144 Squadron RAF but unfortunately they didn't fly that many types during their history. So we opened it out to include the number 144. The Republic of Singapore AF used to have a 144 Sqn so a F-5S was possible, and the 144th Fighter Wing, California ANG, has flown many types in a 70 year history. Here are some 144th FW aircraft. They tend to have received hand me downs including this Repo Eagle F-15C (a Revell/Arii hybrid), F-4s in multiple schemes at the same time, and P-51Hs when their Ds went to Korea with the regulars. Unfortunately neither fast jets nor kit builds are my forte! The Cutlass scratchbuild is a cheat as its unit became VA-144 soon after it gave Cutlasses up. The HS144 is from one of my favourite territories of whatiffery and the model owes a lot to a Revell RJ-85.

This is a great theme, which we never exhausted, please feel free to add subjects. I've attached a MiG 1-144 and CF-144 to illustrate, there's a Tu-144, various No144 squadrons around the world, airframes with 144 serials, U-144, even a 144 route on London transport!
Hopefully we'll also see Terry's Trebuchet from the year 1144.
They only ever built one of these, MiG 1-144 was a big aircraft

The Challenger is widely used, In Canadian service it's Known as the CF-144

Here's the Tu 144, in a speculative Cubana livery as Fidel Castro's personal aircraft, - donated to him for his help in the Cuban missile crisis....

The Tu144 from that aspect has a distinct look. I once had a lengthy discussion with an editor when I wanted to use the word 'lugubrious' about a Starlifter that had the same facial expression..............
