Belgium 1944 - a Wespe SPG is captured by US Infantry

Post by Tim R-T-C »

Somewhere in Belgium, or maybe the Netherlands, late in 1944, a US Infantry detachment is moving along a raised track to secure a small village. Unexpectedly a Wespe Self Propelled Gun appeared from cover in the village and started to bombard the road, attempting to destroy a small canal bridge.

Running out of shells, the gunnery crew of the SPG abandoned their vehicle as the US forces approached, making their escape in a Kubelwagen, leaving the driver to attempt to bring it to safety, but after a couple of near-misses from American bazooka rounds, the Czech driver was all too happy to surrender to the green men as they surrounded the vehicle.

So as he sits awaiting a ride in a Jeep into captivity, glad that his war is over, the infantry continue to stream past.

Just a little fun project inbetween other builds. The Wespe is an Arrowhead whitemetal kit with lovely detail on the gun platform interior. The paint scheme is somewhat of an assumption - the type was in use in this area at the time, but I couldn't find a specific profile, but makes sense that it would be painted in the same scheme as other AFVs.

Figures are also Arrowhead US Infantry Advancing with a nice mix of rifle, BAR and bazooka armament.

The base is a Pringles lid with some sculpt-a-mould and polystrene packaging to build it up.

Nice job Tim, I do like a back story.............you see so many models with random elements that have no connection or reason to be there.
