Hawker Tempest VI - Mark 1 Models

The Tempest VI was a late war version of the type fitted with a high powered Napier Sabre Mk. V engine and featuring wing root mounted air intakes to allow a larger under-prop radiator for improved engine cooling, essential for a type intended for tropical use.

The Mark 1 packaging of the kit features their injection moulded Tempest V parts along with a single piece resin wing featuring the altered air intakes. Parts for a single plane are provided along with four late '40s RAF schemes.

The resin wing was a difficult fit to the fuselage, requiring a lot of sanding and filling and even then it lost its dihedral.

This model is of an airframe that saw use at RAF Deversoir at the end of the 1940s. It carried the unusual post-war tropical RAF scheme of dark earth and slate grey which looks more like RLM02 in some interpretations.

I decided to go down the weathered root, giving the rather tired looking airframe a healthy coat of desert sand.

The sandy scenery was created entirely with pigments - giving a realistic but rather fragile result.
